BE PREPARED FOR A RAINY
NIGHT AHEAD, LISA MEADOWS IS
TRACKING STORMS.
FROM MINNESOTA'S MOST
WATCHED STATION, THIS IS WCCO 4
NEWS.
TRIBUTES TO GEORGE FLOYD
CONTINUE THIS WEEKEND OF CALLS
FOR JUSTICE AND CHANGE RING OUT
ACROSS THE TWIN CITIES, THIS IS
A LIVE LOOK FROM SKY Four OF A
PROTEST IN MINNEAPOLIS, THE
GROUP IS ASKING THE MAYOR TO
DEFEND THE POLICE DEPARTMENT
AND INVEST IN SAFETY MEASURES
LED BY THE COMMUNITY, DAVID
SHUMAN IS WITH PROTESTERS
TONIGHT, WHERE ARE YOU NOW,
DAVID?
Reporter: WE WERE WALKING
DOWN UNIVERSITY AND JUST TURNED
NORTH ONTO HENNEPIN, YOU CAN
SEE THIS UNITED FRONT BEHIND
ME, I AM NO CROWDED SIZE
EXPERT, THERE HAVE TO BE AT
LEAST 1000 PEOPLE, IT GOES SO
FAR BACK, IT HAS BEEN PEACEFUL
THE WHOLE WAY, THESE PEOPLE
HERE BECAUSE THEY FEEL POLICE
REFORM ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH, THEY
WANT TO DEFUND THE POLICE,
ABOUT WHICH THE DEPARTMENT AND
REDIRECT THE MONEY INTO MENTAL
HEALTH RESOURCES AND AFFORDABLE
HOUSING, THIS IS HAPPENING A
DAY AFTER CHARCOAL WERE BANNED
IN THE MINNEAPOLIS POLICE
DEPARTMENT, BEFORE WE STARTED
WALKING HERE, BLACK SPEAKERS,
AMERICAN INDIAN SPEAKERS GAVE
SPEECHES, THEY SANG, ONE GUEST
REALLY CAPTURED THE ATTENTION,
CONGRESSWOMAN SPOKE ABOUT HER
INTENTION TO OVERHAUL THE
SYSTEM.
I DON'T BELIEVE THERE IS
MORE TRAINING TO BE DONE.
I DON'T BELIEVE THERE IS MORE
MONEY TO BE INVESTED IN THE
POLICE.
I DON'T BELIEVE THAT WE CAN
HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT HOW
TO MAKE THEM BETTER ANYMORE,
AND I AM DELIGHTED TO KNOW THAT
THERE IS CONSENSUS IN THE
MINNEAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL THAT
BELIEVES THIS DEPARTMENT IS
INHERENTLY BEYOND REFORM.
